PGY-1 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency Program

Description
Huntsville Hospital's PGY-1 Residency in Pediatric Pharmacy Practice is a 12-month program designed to provide training in pediatrics and neonatal pharmacy practice at our dedicated women and children's facility, Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. The successful candidate will participate in providing pharmaceutical care for patients on the Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children campus as well as being given the opportunity for elective experiences in the adult acute care facility. Residents receive training in direct patient care, drug information and drug policy development, and management. Residents serve as an integral part of our ongoing staff development program for our pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and also precept Doctor of Pharmacy candidates from Auburn University School of Pharmacy. Each resident presents a poster during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting that falls during their residency year and completes a major project, presenting the results at the annual Southeastern Residency Conference in Athens, Georgia.

Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children Campus
Huntsville Hospital and UAB-Health Center occupy over 45 acres in the heart of Huntsville's Medical District. Huntsville Hospital is an 881-bed regional referral center serving a population of more than one million people. The UAB-Health Center consists of approximately 45 medical students and 36 medical residents. UAB Medical School operates the J. Ellis Sparks, MD Medical Library that is near the main Huntsville Hospital facility. Additionally, Huntsville Hospital has affiliation agreements with numerous hospitals and physician practices in the area and is in the process of building the state’s first new hospital in 30 years in the neighboring community of Madison.


Features of Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children include:

  • North Alabama's only Level III Neonatal ICU
  • 40 Neonatal ICU, 40 general peds and 10 PICU beds
  • 16 pediatric sub-specialists
  • Pediatric ER
  • On-site St. Jude's affiliate outpatient clinic
  • Clinical Pharmacist Specialists in PICU, Neonatal ICU and Pediatric ER
  • Auburn Pharmacy Faculty Member rounding in general pediatrics

Philosophy
The PGY-1 Residency in Pediatric Pharmacy Practice builds on previous education and experience and is directed toward developing expert knowledge and skills in pediatric pharmacy practice, with a goal of producing pediatric pharmacy generalists. The program is flexible and allows the resident to pursue individual interests and goals.

Electives
Pediatric residents are given the opportunity to participate in several practice experiences outside pediatrics/neonatology.

  •  Cardiology
  •  Internal Medicine
  •  Medication Safety
  •  OB/GYN
  •  Oncology
  •  Academia
  •  And many others

Requirements
Each resident will complete the following in order to receive a residency certificate:

  • Obtain an Alabama Pharmacist License by October 1 of the residency year
  • Submit and present a poster at the ASHP Midyear meeting during the residency year
  • Present the resident’s major project at SERC during the residency year
  • Submit a publication-ready manuscript and slides from the resident’s major project to the RPD by the end of the residency year
  • Successfully complete all scheduled rotations
  • Complete and submit all assigned projects

PGY-1 and PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency Information

There is no specific residency application form for Huntsville Hospital - simply submit all required documents and, once all have been received, our interview assessment team will review your materials and make a decision regarding granting an interview.

Academic transcripts, letter of intent, curriculum vitae, three letters of reference and an on-site interview are required.
