PGY-1 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency Program

Description
Huntsville Hospital's PGY-1 Residency in Pediatric Pharmacy Practice is a 12-month program designed to provide training in pediatrics and neonatal pharmacy practice at our dedicated women and children's facility, Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. The successful candidate will participate in providing pharmaceutical care for patients on the Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children campus as well as being given the opportunity for elective experiences in the adult acute care facility. Residents receive training in direct patient care, drug information and drug policy development and management.

Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children Campus
Huntsville Hospital and UAB-Health Center occupy over 40 acres in the heart of Huntsville's Medical District. Huntsville Hospital is a 881-bed regional referral center serving a population of over one million people. The UAB-Health Center consists of approximately 45 medical students and 36 medical residents. Huntsville Hospital and the UAB Medical School operate a modern medical library that is located adjacent to the main Huntsville Hospital facility. Additionally, Huntsville Hospital has a management agreement with Athens-Limestone Hospital and is in the process of building the state’s first new hospital in 30 years in the neighboring community of Madison.


Features of Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children include:

  • North Alabama's only Level III Neonatal ICU
  • 40 Neonatal ICU, 40 general peds and 10 PICU beds
  • 16 pediatric sub-specialists
  • Pediatric ER
  • On-site St. Jude's affiliate outpatient clinic
  • Clinical Pharmacist Specialists in PICU and Neonatal ICU
  • Auburn Pharmacy Faculty Member rounding in general pediatrics

Residents also serve as an integral part of our ongoing staff development program and may be asked to deliver didactic lectures at Auburn University School of Pharmacy. Each resident must complete a major project and present the results at the annual Southeastern Residency Conference in Athens, Georgia.

Philosophy
The PGY-1 Residency in Pediatric Pharmacy Practice builds on previous education and experience and is directed toward developing expert knowledge and skills in pediatric pharmacy practice, with a goal of producing pediatric pharmacy generalists. The program is flexible and allows the resident to pursue individual interests and goals.

Pediatric Residents are given the opportunity to participate in several practice experiences outside pediatrics/neonatology.
