Dimensional Care: 3D Mammography

The Huntsville Hospital and Madison Hospital Breast Centers are entering their third year with 3D mammography capability.

As the demand for this technology grows, we continue to replace our 2D digital mammography units with 3D-capable equipment. As the largest volume breast center in the state, the costs of expanding 3D mammography is substantial. But we believe this investment will benefit our patients.

Clinical trials have shown that the 3D mammography technology utilized at Huntsville Hospital and Madison Hospital Breast Centers may detect 20 to 65 percent more invasive breast cancers than 2D alone.* Further, 3D mammography has been shown to decrease the number of patient callbacks for additional imaging after screening examinations by up to 40 percent.* Fewer patients called back means fewer women experiencing the anxiety of waiting to return for additional imaging, fewer women incurring the expense of additional medical studies, and fewer women missing time away from work and other duties.

While 3D mammography generates far more images for the radiologist to examine, patients will not notice a difference in the examination. 

The Liz Hurley Ribbon Run has directly funded three 3D units thus far—two of the five units at Huntsville Hospital and one of the two units at Madison Hospital. Ribbon Run proceeds also allowed us to purchase a device to biopsy abnormalities only visualized on 3D imaging.

We are extremely grateful that enthusiasm and support for the Ribbon Run continues to grow year after year, and we are very fortunate to be part of a community of people who share our passion for providing the best technology and care for women throughout our region.
