Huntsville Hospital is first in Alabama to offer Mazor X for spine surgery
Huntsville Hospital is the first in Alabama to offer the world’s most advanced computer-guided spine surgery robot.
In fact, the hospital is among just a handful in the entire Southeast with a Mazor X robotic surgery system for treatment of spinal deformities, spinal stenosis, chronic back pain and other spine conditions.
Dr. Brian Scholl, an orthopedic surgeon at The Orthopaedic Center (TOC), recently performed Alabama’s first Mazor X-assisted spine surgery at Huntsville Hospital.
Two other physicians on the hospital’s medical staff – neurosurgeon Dr. Jason Banks from Huntsville Hospital Spine & Neuro Center and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry M. Parker from TOC – are being credentialed to use the Mazor X system.
Using Mazor X’s powerful surgical planning software, a surgeon maps out the procedure ahead of time based on the patient’s unique anatomy. The FDA-approved software even simulates how the procedure will improve the patient’s posture. Mazor’s robotic arm then positions tools according to the surgery plan and verifies that they are in exactly the right spot for the best possible outcome.
- A faster recovery due to smaller incisions
- Fewer post-surgery complications
- Less exposure to radiation and anesthesia during surgery
The Mazor X system underscores Huntsville Hospital’s commitment to providing the region’s most comprehensive robotic surgery program. The hospital also has four da Vinci surgical robots as well as a MAKOplasty robotic arm system for knee and hip replacement.
