The Breast Center Named in Honor of Cancer Survivor
She is the epitome of what it means to be a survivor. Strong, resilient and gracious. Eleanor B. Thurber, known to her friends as Susy, already had a beautiful legacy to leave to those who know her.
Now she’s leaving a legacy to those who don’t. On Sunday, August 26th, The Breast Center at Huntsville Hospital was named The Eleanor B. Thurber Breast Center, in honor of Susy.
“We are pleased to name the hospital's Breast Center in honor of Susy, a courageous breast cancer survivor and an outstanding community volunteer who perfectly exemplifies the volunteer spirit and passion that have made Huntsville Hospital the crown jewel of our community for more than 112 years,” said Candy Burnett, president of Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
Susy and her husband Bob have been dear friends and supporters of the Foundation for many years. They provided the lead gift for the Foundation’s Operation Excellence campaign.
“Their most recent gift provided the catalyst we needed to encourage others to support this important lifesaving initiative,” Burnett said.
The goal of Operation Excellence is to raise $1.65 million by December 2008. The donations will be used to purchase five pieces of cutting-edge medical technology, including a Breast MRI for The Breast Center.
How fitting that this lifesaving equipment will reside in a center named after Susy Thurber – an inspiration to women everywhere.
