Small rubber bands are placed on the lower most portion of enlarged blood vessels in the esophagus. This is done in conjunction with a Gastroscopy. The tightening created by the rubber bands is sufficient to eradicate the varices.
Most often the patient must be without food or drink at least 6 hours prior to the test. Usually, the physician holds food or drink after midnight the night prior. A hospital stay is required of approximately 2 hours from the time the patient arrives in the Endoscopy Center waiting room to completion of the procedure.
