Occasionally, immediately prior to the procedure an ultrasound may be performed in the Endoscopy Center to assist the physician in locating the site. The patient may or may not be sedated for this procedure. A special needle is placed in the liver and small amount of tissue is removed. After the procedure, bed rest and observation are required for 4 - 5 hours depending on the physicians preference. The patient will be placed in a private room with a television. Meals will be provided. One family member will be allowed to stay with the patient if desired. The patient should be aware that even after discharge they are required to go home and go to bed for the remainder of the day.
Usually nothing to eat or drink for at least 6 hours prior to the procedure.
