Athlete of the Week for October Week 2
Kenneth "Denzel" Butler
Johnson High School
Our next Athlete of the Week for the month of October hails from the land of Jaguars. Make no mistake, though. His last name may be Butler, but this sharp-shooter is a Johnson student, through and through. With his quick feet and his quick wit, Kenneth Butler, or Denzel, as he prefers to be called, is quickly bolting to the head of the pack at J.O. Johnson High School. When basketball season kicks off this year, you're sure to see Denzel lead the fabulous five Jaguars on the court as Team Captain. His play is getting him a lot of attention around the region. When you make better than 40 percent of your shots, you're sure to be ranked in the Top 80 players of the Class of 2013 by ScoutFocus.com. He was also named as an All-Star by the Southeast Basketball Academy, an organization that highlights outstanding basketball players from around the region. In the classroom, his aim is even sharper. Denzel is in the Top 5 percent of his graduating class, he's the student government president and editor of the school newspaper. He's predicted to be the class valedictorian, and with a 3.81 GPA and a permanent spot on the honor roll, who could argue. His strong faith fuels his desire for success. He's an active member of the FCA and founded the First Priority group at Johnson High School; an organization helping bring young men and women to their faith. Denzel doesn't slow down a step, even after the bell rings. He belongs to Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Read to Achieve group. He was a community clean-up leader after last April's storms and he is very active in his church as a junior usher, a praise dancer and a special education mentor. Congratulations, Denzel!
