Athlete of the Week for April Week 1
Bob Jones High School
As a high school senior, students have their whole future ahead of them. Some may already have their paths planned out for them; others may see what the future holds for them. Then, there are those whose paths are so clear, their interests now are ones they likely plan to follow in college and beyond. Here in North Alabama, science and technology reign supreme, so imagine how refreshing it is to know one of the area’s own has a love for what made the community what it is, today. Meet Eric Dong. He’s a senior at Bob Jones High School and he stands to “live long and prosper” in the field of science. He’s already a stellar soccer player for the Patriots. Eric started dominating the soccer scene in Madison when he was an eighth grader at Liberty Middle School. From there, he’s made the varsity squad each and every year. His highest achievement on the field is making the Alabama state Olympic Development Program which identifies and advances the most talented soccer players in the state. In the classroom, you can tell he hits the books as hard as he hits the soccer ball. Eric is a National Merit Semifinalist who scored a 34 on his ACT, and also an AP scholar, with distinction. He carries a 4.6 GPA, but where Eric’s academic talents really shine is in the subject of science. His highest achievement is placing first in the 2010 Alabama ACTE State Technology Fair: a program designed to incorporate technology in to education at Alabama schools. His love of science carries over to his volunteer work. Eric has acquired nearly 70 volunteer hours at Sci-Quest summer camps the last two years, and plans for more. He has also shared his time helping four-legged friends and The Ark animal shelter and helps referee youth soccer games as a volunteer for AYSO. Congratulations, Eric!
