Athlete of the Week for October Week 4
Bob Jones High School
What makes a great Athlete of the Year candidate is someone who stands out from the rest. Typically, those individuals continue through their high school careers not keeping a tally of all their accomplishments, whether great or small. It’s only when someone, who is on the outside looking in, notices that they are in the presence of someone special that recognition surfaces. Such a case would be our next Athlete of the week; Andrew Laing from Bob Jones High School. Andrew’s athletic successes can’t be found on dry land. Rather, he begins on dry land and then dives in to his work. This Patriot has made a name for himself on the Bob Jones High School Diving team. You could almost call him the anchor of the diving team, having helped the team capture 3 of the last 7 consecutive State Championships. He’s done this while serving as team captain the past three years and as Assistant Dive Coach for the current season. Andrew’s talents have garnered him national praise as a member of two Junior Olympic National Diving Teams, with top 10 placements in five events at National Dive Meets. Andrew’s talents aren’t just reserved for the water. He’s been a percussionist for the Patriot band and is currently percussion captain. He’s also a frequent member on the A/B honor roll, with a 3.68 GPA and serves on the Varsity Athletic Leadership Council at Bob Jones High School, where they worked to raise money for the Toys for Tots program. He has also helped with his church youth group in repairing homes for the elderly and handicapped and taken time to teach percussion techniques to middle school students. Congratulations Andrew!
