Athlete of the Week for December Week 4
Sparkman High School
Sport: Varsity Competition Cheer Team
Thanks in part to Hollywood and the ever-growing popularity of Competition Cheerleading, the days of saying, “Cheerleading is NOT a sport,” are over. For those who still adopt this adage, Christin Spencer would like to prove them wrong. Our final Athlete of the Year for 2011 puts the “competition” in to Competition Cheerleading, and you only have to go so far as her resume’ to see why. Somewhere, amongst the many championship team photos that lining the walls of Sparkman High School’s main gym, you’ll find Christin Spencer’s picture several times. She’s been part of the team for four years, was recently named Cheer Captain at Sparkman and has helped lead the Senators to Regional Championships, State Championships and two National Championships in 2009 and 2011. Her athletic leadership transcends to academic leadership with her numerous accolades. Christin was named an All-American Scholar and named to represent Sparkman High School at “Girls State 2011,” a state-wide program which highlights outstanding young women. She also has a head start on her constituents, with her involvement in “Early College Student” programs at the University of Alabama. Her faith is a strong as her school spirit. Christin has shared in mission trips, working and playing with young children while teaching them about God. She has also accumulated nearly 150 hours of community service, was a volunteer at Huntsville Hospital and also spreads her love of cheer by teaching at cheer camps to elementary and middle school boys and girls. Congratulations, Christin!
