Bone Density Testing
Bone density tests are useful in helping your doctor diagnose osteoporosis, particularly in the early stages before broken bones occur. When tests are repeated over time, they can also help your doctor track your rate of bone loss.
Recommendations for screening according to the World Health Organization suggest that women have a baseline scan at the start of menopause. Then based on your results and your doctor's plan of care, you may be retested every one to four years.
Men can also have osteoporosis. Based on the family history, lifestyle choices and general health of the man, his doctor will decide if and when to do bone density testing.
Bone density tests need to be scheduled by a physician.
