Pediatric ER - open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Pediatric ER At Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children, our staff provides age-appropriate care in the treatment of injuries and illnesses, because infants, children and teenagers are all unique. Our patients are cared for by experienced physicians and nurses trained and certified in pediatrics. Our Pediatric Emergency Room, located on the first floor of Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children, is the only child-focused facility between Birmingham and Nashville. From the pediatric sub-specialists and emergency medicine physicians to the friendly, colorful décor, everything we do is designed to calm our patients and comfort their anxious parents or caregivers.

Our Pediatric Emergency Room is a 16-bed center for patients 21-years-old and younger. Because accidents or illnesses can happen at anytime, we are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Pain Management

When a child arrives to the Pediatric ER, he or she is immediately greeted by a Registered Nurse. The nurse assesses the patient’s needs and can start treating the pain within minutes of arrival. Pain management methods include topical sprays, skin-numbing ointments and procedural sedation. To prevent unnecessary pain, the Pediatric ER invests in new technology like the Vein Viewer that prevents multiple “sticks” by highlighting tiny, hard-to-find veins.

Child-focused surroundings, equipment

From our child-sized wheelchairs to our colorful ceiling tiles, everything was selected with young people in mind. An activity area located near the Pediatric ER waiting room, complete with toys and video games, provides a fun distraction for patients and their siblings. All of our medical equipment is calibrated for children, and we use smaller needles, scopes and tubes. Our nurses even avoid “stark-white uniforms” in favor of friendly, colorful scrubs that put our patients at ease.

Child Life Specialists

The Child Life Specialists help meet the emotional needs of children by using developmental play as a way for children to express fears or concerns. The specialists plan activities and entertainment to distract patients from hospital routines. They also help children understand procedures and equipment by demonstrating on dolls first. These gifted individuals have earned advanced degrees in child life or development and must pass a certification exam to earn the title of a Certified Child Life Specialist. They are available to assist children and families in pediatric units throughout the hospital.

Kids Care Transport

Kids Care, the region’s pediatric and neonatal critical care transport program, is available 24-7 from Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. But Kids Care is more than the region’s pediatric and neonatal transport, it is an “ICU on wheels,” staffed by highly trained pediatric and neonatal transport medical teams. From hospitals throughout the region, injured and critically ill children and newborns are transported to Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children to the area’s only Pediatric ER, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
