HH Lab offers COVID-19 antibody testing
The Huntsville Hospital Laboratory is now offering antibody testing to determine if you have been exposed to or infected with COVID-19.
Our easy, fast and accurate antibody test received Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2020. It meets all current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention antibody testing recommendations.
The test itself requires only a physician order and simple blood draw. The blood sample is collected at your physician’s office or at any Huntsville Hospital Lab Patient Service Center location. Test results are typically available the same day our Lab receives the sample.
We use the Roche Diagnostics Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody test due to its accuracy and reliability. The test will determine a correct result for the presence or absence of COVID-19 antibodies 99.81 percent of the time, meaning false positives are rare. It has proven 100 percent sensitive for the presence of antibodies 14 days or more after a confirmed infection.
Antibody testing can show whether a person has ever been infected with and potentially developed an immune response to COVID-19, even if they never had symptoms. It is different from testing to detect an active infection.
Antibody testing must be ordered by a physician, so the first step is to call your health care provider and request a test.
