Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes heart disease and stroke, is the leading cause of death in the United States and in Alabama. Heart disease is the most common form of CVD and is the single leading cause of death in Alabama. In 2006, heart disease accounted for 12,583 (26.7 percent) deaths in the state.
