The Huntsville Hospital Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic provides comprehensive treatment for victims of Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA) also known as strokes. Located within the Huntsville Hospital Medical Mall at Therapy and Sports Rehab, the Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic offers the three therapeutic specialties in one convenient location. We emphasize functional recovery through the sub-acute and chronic phases of the brain injury. Through our multifaceted program, we guide treatments based on the  individual's goals to achieve the greatest functional success for quality of life through the progression of the condition.

All patients require a physician's referral for each of the three therapeutic specialties (below) offered by the Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic. Following physician's referral, each therapeutic specialty conducts an evaluation and needs assessment to tailor the individual's treatment.

The three therapeutic specialties include the following:

Physical Therapy

The Physical Therapist (PT) and Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) guide individuals in mobility rehabilitation focused on the trunk, pelvis, knees, ankles and feet. We concentrate on bed mobility, balance, sit-to-stand, floor-to-stand and more normalized walking for a return to greatest independence and safe movement in the home and community.

Occupational Therapy

An Occupational Therapist (OT) and Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) work one-on-one with the patient. We emphasize a return of physical function for the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands with emphasis on functional movement to promote independence and participation in self care and leisure tasks.

Speech Therapy

A Speech Therapist (SLP) provides treatment for swallowing ability, speech clarity, language use, and cognitive function (thinking/memory). We prioritize safe eating and swallowing in addition to understanding and being understood during communication for greatest possible independence during daily living activities.

A physician's referral is required for each of the three therapeutic specialties. Download referral forms here.

Chris's Story

"My experience at Huntsville Hospital's Therapy Services for stroke rehabilitation has been nothing short of amazing. After my stroke, I couldn't move the right side of my body, but thanks to the incredible team of therapists, I have been able to improve my skills, strength, balance and coordination over the last few months. They have given me a new found confidence and encouragement to keep going. I would highly encourage anyone in need of rehabilitation services to come and experience some of the best therapy around. The individualized plan that they put in place for me was tailored to my specific needs, and everyone down there has been so good. They really kept me going when I felt like giving up. Thank you, Huntsville Hospital's Therapy Services, for helping me get back on my feet!"

- Christopher Cook, Stroke Rehab patient
