LPN Launch Program logoBecome a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and work at the largest hospital in North Alabama through the LPN Launch Program Powered by Drake State! An LPN works under the supervision of a health care provider, performing duties such as taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medication, ensuring patient comfort and reporting the status of their patients to the nurses.

What is the LPN Launch Program?

The LPN Launch Program is a joint venture between Huntsville Hospital and Drake State Community and Technical College. Practical Nursing (PN) curriculum classes will be taught by Drake instructors at Huntsville Hospital’s Cochran campus.

How do I apply?

You can apply today online at drakestate.edu.

  1. Apply for admission to Drake State.
All new students must complete a Drake State admission application before applying to the nursing program. Follow the Drake State step-by-step admission checklist to get started.
  2. Enroll in general education classes.
  3. Apply for admission into the Practical Nursing (PN) program.
Practical Nursing is a three-semester comprehensive certificate program of study that integrates theory and clinical practice. The curriculum is designed to provide qualified individuals an opportunity to acquire the knowledge, mindset, and skills to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) who work under the supervision of professional registered nurses. Upon successful completion of the program, students take the practical nursing licensure examination (NCLEX-PN).

What courses do I need to complete before starting the PN program?

You will need to complete Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II, English, Math, Speech and Psychology. This will take a minimum of two semesters.

Are scholarships available?

Huntsville Hospital will pay up to $15,000 in tuition, fees, books and other expenses related to nursing classes in exchange for a commitment to work 18 months as an LPN in any of our Madison County hospital campuses.

What happens after I am accepted into the LPN Launch Program?

Congratulations! You will be hired by Huntsville Hospital. You must complete a drug and background screen, an immunization screen and a physical exam to meet employment and educational requirements. You will also decide if you will select to be in the Non-Apprentice or Apprentice Track.

What is the difference between Non-Apprentice and Apprentice Track?

Post-graduation, can I go to school to become a RN and still satisfy the work commitment at Huntsville Hospital?

Yes, provided you can attend classes and still work full-time. You will also be eligible for tuition reimbursement while going to school, whether you decide to go immediately following graduation or wait until a later date.

Where can I get more information about the LPN Launch Program?

Visit drakestate.edu, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call (256) 551-3156.

What happens if I decide to leave Huntsville Hospital within the contract requirement?

After graduation, the agreement is for a full-time (36 hours per week) commitment. A pro-rated repayment can be arranged if the contract is broken within the contract requirement.

Is the program applicable for all Huntsville Hospital Health System hospitals and clinics?

At this time the program is only available for the Madison County hospital campuses which include Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children and Madison Hospital.

Huntsville Hospital provides Patient Care Aide training to prepare an individual to understand and assist health care providers with a patient’s care during hospitalization. During an intensive three-day training period, students receive clinical instruction and simulation lab practice to apply when meeting patient care needs.

There are no prerequisites. This is a non-accredited program, and students are not eligible to take the national certification exam. You must be eligible to be a hospital employee.

*Individuals currently employed by Huntsville Hospital may apply but their overall work history including any past disciplinary actions will be taken into consideration in the final applicant selection process. Interested individuals may obtain information from Corporate University offices.
